Reduced Heel Cushioning
Under the heel bone lies a layer of fatty padding that cushions the heel when the foot impacts the ground during standing, walking and running. If this fatty layer decreases in thickness or starts to disintegrate (known as ‘fat pad atrophy’) it is less able to withstand the forces of ground contact and pain can arise.
